Consisting of two parts, Sundials have a face which includes a wide range of decorative motifs and contains the hours of the day, and a gnomon, or shadow arm. Sundials are usually mounted on a stand, but they may also be set on a wall or on the ground, always making sure the face sets horizontal to the earth and the gnomon and the 12:00 position on the dial pointing north.
Armillary spheres work the same way a sundial works, except they are round, not flat. Armillaries were used well into the 17th century to teach the concepts and coordinate systems of spherical astronomy. The Earth is at the center, and rings represent the horizon, equator, tropics, ecliptic, and important colures.
