Consisting of two parts, Sundials have a face which includes a wide range of decorative motifs and contains the hours of the day, and a gnomon, or shadow arm. Sundials are usually mounted on a stand, but they may also be set on a wall or on the ground, always making sure the face sets horizontal to the earth and the gnomon and the 12:00 position on the dial pointing north.
Armillary spheres work the same way a sundial works, except they are round, not flat. Armillaries were used well into the 17th century to teach the concepts and coordinate systems of spherical astronomy. The Earth is at the center, and rings represent the horizon, equator, tropics, ecliptic, and important colures. An armillary can be used to demonstrate the angles at which the sun rises and sets at different times of the year. VM armillary spheres are unique, because they are made in America, and because they are made of only the finest materials, ensuring that your armillary will weather the elements and add lasting beauty to your garden. Our sundials and armillaries sit beautifully with any of our VM Stands.
