In Colonial Williamsburg, the cheery glow of lanterns frequently lined the walkways to the entrance of historic buildings. This design was very popular in the late 18th and early 19th century when tin hand-held lanterns were common. The ring at the top makes it easy and convenient to carry. The ring can also be used to hang on a hook to help cast needed light in a dark corner. While in the 18th century a new lantern of this style would have been produced in bright tin, VM offers the lantern in a variety of metals and finishes to simulate years of weathering and use.
