Feeding on meat, as well as grasses, herbs, berries, nuts, and honey, bears
are the largest land carnivores. Generally massive and short legged, bears
vary in size from the smallest Sun Bear (weighing 59-80 pounds) to the huge
Alaskan Brown Bear (weighing up to 1,700 pounds). Despite their bulkiness,
most bears climb with ease and are very strong swimmers. The bear often sleeps
fitfully through much of the winter, usually gaining weight before-hand. Bears
in the wild live from 15 to 30 years.
