Two species of wolves are recognized: the gray wolf and the red wolf. The gray wolf is somewhat larger, measuring up to 6.5 feet in length and weighing up to 175 pounds. The wolf is a formidable hunter. The parents and cubs travel as a pack. During the winter months, larger packs may assemble in search of food sometimes traveling 40 to 60 miles a day. Early Americans greatly admired the wolf, and sometimes regarded wolves as gods.
