Gospel or Evagelio in Greek, means Good News. The Gospels are a infinate story of Jesus Christ's life and teachings. He is surrounded by the Apostles, the four great Evangelists; Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John, the writers of the four Gospels. On the front of the cover is a scene of Christ’s Crucifixion and on the back is a scene of the Resurrection, which is surrounded in some manner with the four Evangelists.
The Liturgy of the Word, is the proclamation of the Good News. It begins with the priest approaching the Holy Table, opening the royal doors. Incensing and then raising the Book of Gospels up before the people, the priest sings, "Blessed be the Kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever." The Liturgy consists of ektenias (litanies - fervent supplications of the people), prayers, hymns, and psalms. During the Little Entrance, the Gospel Book is processed through the people to the altar, troparions, kondakions are sung. First the Epistle, read from the Epistle Lectionary is sung, next the Gospel reading and depending on the Rite the people may gather around the priest or deacon as the Gospel is read, afterwards venerating the Gospel Book. Now the priest gives his homily, and another ektenia is sung to prepare the faithful for the Liturgy of the Eucharist and receiving it worthily.
