Left of the Altar in a Byzantine Church, whether Catholic or Orthodox, is the
proskomedijnyk, prothesis or table of preparation, on which the Holy Gifts are
readied for consecration during the Divine Liturgy. On the table there is a
cross, two candles, the prosfora (or altar bread), along with the sacred
vessels. The bread that will be used for the Holy Sacrifice is the prosfora, a
small leavened loaf of bread which is inscribed with IC XC NI KA (Jesus Christ
Conquers), made by a prosfora stamp. Placed on the prothesis are the the
asterisk (or star), the chalice, the diskos (or paten), and the holy lance.
The asterisk has two golden bands joined at the center, which upon opening
form a cross with a tiny gold star that hangs from its center. Placing it over
the diskos, the asterisk keeps the chalice veils from touching the Consecrated
Bread. The small star formed by the asterisk symbolizes the star that appeared
to the Magi. The Chalice is a golden cup with a stem and base that holds the
wine. When wine is mixed with the water, and Consecrated, it becomes the Blood
of Christ. The small, golden circular plate with stem and base that holds the
particles of bread for consecration is the diskos. These particles of bread
become the Body of Christ. What appears as a miniature spear with a double
edge blade, is the holy lance. It is used for cutting the prosfora, the altar
breads, during the Preparation of the Divine Liturgy. The lance reminds us of
the lance which pierced the side of Jesus while He was on the cross, as the
Roman soldier sought to see if he was dead. Also, on the prothesis table are
cruets, some type of small vessels that contain the wine and water used for
the Divine Liturgy.
Our Byzantine Chalices are madey by master craftsmen from
Greece, which are used by the priests in the Byzantine Catholic, Greek and
Russian Orthodox Churches for the Holy Communion. They are hand made of top
quality gold plated brass in the traditional manner and the bread vessel and
spoons of the Holy Communion set are included.
