Greetings from Sean Guy; Director
of Customer Service
Hello! As summer draws to a close
and moves into fall, we in Customer Service have some information
we want to pass along for the coming Holiday seasons. We hope
you are beginning to think of your Holiday plans for your storefronts,
including any special promotions or sales you are going to implement.
First, make sure you are prepared to test a couple of different
promotions so you know what works well. Keep a journal showing
the results so you can refer to them next year at this time.
Here are some things you may want
to test:
- Holiday coupons (new tutorial
in Merchant Services shows how to create a discount rule)
- Percent off orders over a certain
dollar value
- Free shipping on holiday packages
and orders over a certain dollar value
- Holiday packages (decorations,
novelties, etc., that are specific to a holiday theme)
As we move toward the holidays, Customer
Service will be observing the following days and hours:
Labor Day - Monday, September
6.
Telephone support
will resume on Tuesday, September 7 at 7am. MST
Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 25 - Friday November 26.

New Tutorials in Merchant Services
New Tutorial
- Creating a discount on your order form.
This tutorial walks you through setting up your order form to
offer a discount when your customers enter a discount code on
the order form. A
great way to offer a discount is through an autoresponder.
New Tutorial
- Integrating the UPS Online Tools onto your StoresOnline
Web site.
This tutorial takes you through a step-by-step process of connecting
your order form with real-time UPS shipping rates and services.
Both of
the new tutorials are located in Merchant Services. There are
links to each on the What's New page and on the Tutorials page.
Dates
on Merchant Services articles
As you are reviewing the articles in the Marketing section of
Merchant Services, you will notice a date on the upper-left
corner of the page (above the navigation). This is the date
that the article was either posted or was last updated.
New
Features in StoresOnline
"Select
All" and "Remove All" feature on product lists
for pages
When
you are editing the product listing on one of your pages, you
can click the "List on Page" link to check all of the
products in your current view and display them all on the page
at once. This is a "toggle" feature, meaning that if
you click the link again, all of the boxes you checked will be
"unchecked."
"Delete
All" feature in the Products menu
This feature allows you to "mass-delete" all of the
products that are in your current view. Be careful while using
this, because once you delete a product from your Web site, it's
gone! The only way to put that product back on is to manually
add it or import it.
View a
specified number of line items on the Pages, Products, and Orders
menu
There are now 2 drop-down menus: 1) View, and 2) Show. "View"
indicates the group of pages, products, or orders you are viewing,
and "Show" indicates the number of rows displayed on
the screen at a time. Show gives the option to view 20, 50 or
100 rows at a time.
Sort Products
Product sorting has been updated to allow you to automatically
sort by price, item
number, or name, or to set the order manually by position
Additional
Destinations
The European Countries and Australian Provinces have been added
to the Destinations field in the Ordering Rules section. These
can now be added in groups rather than one-by-one.
Added security
When a customer places an order through your StoresOnline Web
site, the actual
credit card numbers are not shown on the receipt page.
Security
Code
The instructions in the Payment Information of the order form
- the Graphical Security Verification Code option that can be
used on your order form to deter fraud or non-human order placement
have been re-worded and are now much more instructive.
Other general
updates
We have completed minor system updates and bug fixes, which will
allow StoresOnline to provide even better service and functionality
for your Web sites. We are constantly monitoring, maintaining,
and updating StoresOnline in order to provide the best service
possible.
Password
for Storefronts Update
Password Usage
As you know, StoresOnline is very concerned about the security
of the data that you pass through your storefronts. We have partnered
with Visa and MasterCard to implement stringent security requirements
regarding passwords that will impact your storefronts with StoresOnline.
The following changes will go into effect on October 1, 2004.
Passwords
are an important aspect of computer security. They are the front
line of protection for user accounts. A poorly chosen password
may result in the compromise of your account. As such, all StoresOnline
merchants are responsible for taking the appropriate steps, as
outlined below, to select and secure their passwords.
Policy
Summary
- All passwords
must be changed at least every six months.
- Passwords
should never be written down, stored online, or sent in emails.
- Never
share the password with ANYONE.
- The password
must contain at least six characters and have at least one number
and/or punctuation character (!@$%^, etc.), as well as letters.
- The password
must not use common words, such as words found in a dictionary
(English or foreign); names of family, pets, friends, coworkers,
or fantasy characters; a business name; the words "imergent",
"storesonline", "utah", or similar words;
birthdays and other personal information, such as addresses
and phone numbers; word or number patterns like aaabbb, qwerty,
zyxwvuts, 123321, abc123 etc.
- The password
cannot contain common words of four or more characters any where
in the word. Example: If you used the word speaker to create
a password such as "Speak3r" it would fail because
the password would still contain the word "peak".
- The password
must not be any of the above spelled backward or preceded or
followed by a digit or punctuation character (e.g., secret1,
!secret)
- All accounts
will be locked for a minimum of 30 minutes if the password is
entered in 3 times incorrectly.
- If you
believe your account or password has been compromised, report
the incident to StoresOnline, Inc. and change all passwords.
Examples
Try to create passwords that can be easily remembered. One way
to do this is create a password based on a song title, affirmation,
or other phrase. For example, the phrase might be: "This
May Be One Way To Remember" and the password, using the first
letter of each word in the phrase, could be: "TmB1w2R!"
or "Tmb1W>r~" or some other variation. Or use variations
of words together, with a twist on the words. For example: "One
Summer Day" and the password, using numbers or punctuation
characters for letters (examples: 1 or ! for I; @ for a; 3 for
e); shortened variations of the word (example: summer = sumr);
adding numbers or punctuation characters in between words (example:
One Day = 1!D@y); could be: "1sUm3rd@y&" or "On3Sumd@Y"
or some other variation.
DO NOT
USE ANY OF THESE EXAMPLES AS YOUR PASSWORD.
College
Freshman a Step Ahead Thanks to Online Shoe Stores

Merchant - Bryan Castleman
College Freshman a Step Ahead Thanks to Online Shoe Stores
Within six
months of publishing his first online storefront, college freshman
Bryan Castleman had about 3,000 customers.
His success
began after attending an Internet marketing workshop presented
by StoresOnline. Bryan's father, who owned and operated a business
selling boots to employees of utility companies, had attempted
to put the family business online, but without much success. At
18 years old, Bryan attempted to open an Internet business of
his own, but averaged only one sale per week.
When Bryan
attended the StoresOnline workshop, he became excited again about
the Internet's business potential. He, with a friend, purchased
several StoresOnline storefronts. They went online that night
and began applying what they had learned at the workshop. Bryan
published his storefronts as quickly as he could.
One of Bryan's
sites-one that sells discounted boots-started getting between
two and six orders per day within the first week. Between June
and December, Bryan averaged nearly ten orders per day.
Bryan's dad's
website, Shoe Shack, went live in August. He and his son began
advertising in September. Between September and December of that
year, the site had gross sales of $48,000. Since then Bryan and
his dad have published two more websites, both making sales on
the first day they were published.
"I wouldn't
be where I am now if it weren't for StoresOnline," says Bryan.
"I was able to go out and buy a car. At my age, that's unheard
of!"
Between August
and December, Bryan Castleman's sites sold $120,000 worth of shoes.
Of that, Bryan spent about $25,000 for advertising. But other
than that and his initial investment in StoresOnline storefronts,
Bryan has very little business expense. He has a very healthy
profit margin for his shoes, so between August and December, he
achieved a net income of approximately $38,000 (an annual rate
of $65,000). Not bad for a college freshman!
